“But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NLT)

To know and understand the truth is to be free. Whenever we  turn to the Lord, the veil that blocks knowledge and understanding of truth is taken away. We receive the mind of Christ and we can apprehend truth and begin to understand it. This is true freedom.

When we are in bondage, we don’t know that we don’t know. Ignorance – being unaware of what you don’t know – can be highly dangerous. When we’re ignorant, we think we know it all. When we make decisions out of this type of mindset, we achieve less than stellar results in life and we can’t quite pinpoint why bad things are happening. Left unchecked, this vicious cycle brings ambivalence and then depression. When we want for good things to happen but bad things continually happen, our very desire to live can be snuffed out. The devil loves it when we live in this state where we cannot apprehend freedom. And so he does his best to keep that veil firmly in place. He does this by blocking our view of truth.

But the Bible says whenever we turn to the Lord this veil is taken away. The minute we believe in Jesus, the veil can be removed. Do you remember the joy of the moment of first believing in Jesus? It may have made no “sense” to you in the moment, but there was still a knowing that things were going to work out. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we have a new level of understanding and processing that we didn’t have without him. The Bible says the Holy Spirit teaches us things, confirms things and reconciles our thinking and knowing to that of God. True freedom is not having to figure everything out all of the time. How blessed are we that God wants us to know the truth and not figure out the truth?

Part of the bondage of the devil is a misconception that God is hiding things from us so that we have to figure everything out. But John 8:31-33 tells us Jesus told those who believed in him that they would know the truth and the truth would set them free. Freedom comes down to who we trust and believe. When we believe Jesus we will know the truth and the truth will set us free. Truth doesn’t come from cracking a code or being smart enough to figure out how to break the bondage ourselves. It comes from trusting Jesus to deliver freedom to us through faith.
